In 2022, the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics, and Pedorthics (ABC) reported the highest number of professionals earning a Master's Degree program in 2010. The percentage of certified prosthetists (CPs) obtaining a Master's Degree increased from 4% in 2015 to 26% in 2022. Since 2015, the Practice Analysis of Certified Practitioners in the Disciplines of Orthotics and Prosthetics has noted an increase in minimum necessary knowledge requirement regarding gait analysis and biomechanics while adding the performance of prosthetic gait training as a distant domain of knowledge and skills. This shift shows that CPs are responsible for providing care beyond the delivery of a prosthetic alone. CPs are present as an individual takes his or her first steps in the clinic, typically without a physical therapist present to guide appropriate gait biomechanics and cures. Knowledge and the proper application of basic gait training techniques empower CPs to assist in the development of optimal gait patterns in patients who use lower-limb prosthetics.
