Description
This presentation summarizes peer-reviewed literature pertaining to the prosthetic rehabilitation of individuals with multiple limb amputations that has been published since 1970. This valuable review of the current literature will allow professionals to consider research-based strategies for improving rehabilitation outcomes for amputees with multiple limb loss. The literature included covers information for bilateral upper-extremity, bilateral lower-extremity, and combined upper- and lower-extremity amputees. The review also presents prognostic factors associated with successful outcomes in lower-extremity amputations. A carefully constructed Medline search produced nine articles ultimately included in the review. The review excludes studies on non-human subjects and those written in languages other than English. Participants will review research from around the globe covering amputations caused by trauma, vascular disease, and other illnesses. This review will provide valuable background information for any member of the rehabilitation team working with patients with multiple limb loss.
