Description
This presentation provides an overview of the research that influences the current understanding of balance deficits in individuals with multiple sclerosis. The etiology and incidence of this disorder are reviewed, and the presenter describes the disease's primary symptoms and typical progression patterns. Next, a review of pertinent medical literature is presented. The presenter briefly discusses common strategies for treating these symptoms and provides a philosophical framework for assessing which interventions are likely to work. Information in the literature review is divided into three categories: balance control, gait disturbances, and falls in multiple sclerosis. Studies that shed light on the underlying reasons for impaired postural responses are discussed. Common gait impairments are reviewed. Finally, information and risk factors associated with falls in patients with multiple sclerosis are presented. This course provides excellent background information for professionals working with this patient population.
