Description
This module will educate the viewer on up to date nomenclature when working with the cerebral palsy patient that will allow communication between the PT/OT, the physician and the orthotist. The Ashworth scale, gross motor function classification system, and definitions of spastic hypertonicity versus dystonia will be covered. The presentation illustrates novel approaches and modalities aimed at increasing ROM. The approach is to build a foundation first through gained ROM and then to capitalize on this range with appropriate ambulating orthoses. The goal is to educate the treating orthotist to create a plan for the CP patient as opposed to immediately fabricating inappropriate orthoses when patients could be better served by first using orthoses that emphasize increased ROM.
