An assistive device is operationally defined as any external device, piece of equipment, or product system—whether acquired commercially, modified, or customized—used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of an individual with a chronic or acute disability. Common examples of assistive devices include mobility aids such as wheelchairs, walkers, and crutches. Orthoses and prostheses may be considered specialized assistive devices that are often custom made or custom fitted by a professional based on a patient's clinical presentation. Orthotic or prosthetic interventions enable people with mobility challenges to achieve greater function and independence. Individuals with various neurological, orthopedic, or musculoskeletal pathologies may benefit from a properly designed orthosis, prosthesis, or assistive device (OPAD).
