The purpose of this presentation is to discuss outcome measures which have the best ecological validity. Ecological outcome measures are not commonly discussed in our profession, but have have internal validity, are sanctioned by Health and Human Services (HHS), CMS and Office of the National Coordinator (ONC), and used everyday by treating physicians to consider medical necessity and reimbursement. There is clear guidance from organizations such as ISPO, the LLPR, and VA for those clinicians whose priorities for using outcome measures is to improve clinic care, differentiate themselves from other clinics, or because they support research. However, This presentation will primarily target the clinicians whose priority for using outcome measures is justifying medical necessity and reimbursement to assist them with the real-life everyday setting of being accountable for their patients’ needs.

- Upon completion, participants will be able to define important parameters to determine what outcome measures best meet their clinical needs and why to choose them for their everyday clinical needs such as justifying medical necessity.
- Upon completion, participants will be able to determine the best personal reason to use outcome measures, and which outcome measures to use based on their personal reasons.
- Upon completion, participants will be able to describe and understand expectations placed on treating physicians by CMS and HHS, and how that affects physicians’ prosthetic and orthotic clinical notes and prescriptions.
- Upon completion, participants will be able to comprehend how Artificial Intelligence, ecological validity and CMS guidelines are being combined today in the O&P profession to help guide medical necessity and outcome measures to improve reimbursement.
