Classifying Falls in Patients that Use Lower Limb Prosthetics

It is commonly reported that falls happen in the prosthetic population. They are frequent and detrimental to health outcomes and quality of life. There is little information about the types of falls experienced by lower limb prosthesis users to assist clinicians in determining the factors that may contribute to the fall event.
This presentation highlights a fall type classification framework to organize characteristics of the fall to understand the fall event in clinical and research practices, specifically, what are the locations of the destabilizing force, the sources of the destabilizing force, and fall patterns.
The value of understanding and categorizing fall types opens the door for tailoring interventions for the different types of falls lower limb prosthesis users may experience in their daily life.
